Drama

Reachout started initially started as a drama project in 1993 and continues to explore expressive drama workshops. 'Do You Mind?' was produced in 1994. The video was produced after a very successful stage production the previous year.

The video which is based on personal experiences, takes a look at how people with mental health problems are perceived by neighbours, family and friends and people who provide mental health services. The script was created by members of Reachout and is described as "a poignant, entertaining view of mental health as explored by 'users' of psychiatric services and others with an interest in mental health". The video is viewed and reviewed by 4th year community psychology students at Stirling University as part of their core studies. The video content features the stigma, discrimination, isolation and misunderstanding of those experiences mental ill health.

Members then went on to successfully locally present "Kaleidoscope", both a play and a video to mark National Mental Health Week. This was followed by a mini tour of the performance and video.

Open Days have been organised throughout Reachout's 12 year history providing collaborative drama experiences and showcasing video and digital animation work.

A puppet workshop also provided a drama opportunity to 'reach out' to one of our local primary schools. The puppets were hand made by Reachout members and the script created by Reachout members and performed by Reachout members to school teachers, pupils and parents.

Our Reachout documentary 'Moving On' was produced in partnership with 4th year film & media students at Stirling University. The short film was showcased during Mental Health Week October 2005. The documentary follows 2 Reachout members personal experiences of mental ill health, being involved in expressive creative opportunities at Reachout and the steps taken on the road to recovery and wellbeing.

Members are currently developing drama workshops led by one of our members. Everyone with an interest in mental health is invited to participate in these workshops. For drama workshop information please contact Reachout.
